Surfing San Onofre

Surfing | No Comments

I have to admit I never seem to get tired of surfing San Onofre during the summer with some of the B.W. Surf Club crew. Charging with the bro’s at 5:30am is kinda rough Just had to share that a great 6 hours at Old mans was just what the doctor ordered. It’s one of the best places to learn how to surf and it’s always a benefit to be able to park on the sand and bring the dog.

San Onofre’ State Beach

San Onofre’ State Beach is a great place for surfers. Also called San O’, it is a large open beach with plenty of surf from small to large. San O’ is a friendly surf break that is a great place for beginners and families. Longboards strongly recommended. During the lower tides, small (pebbles) and medium (golf ball) round rocks are exposed making the “reef dance” a bit precarious, so booties may help out.

Tips: Get there early! There tends to be a line to get in, especially during a swell. Most of us leave the West side at about 5:30 - 6:00 AM.

Directions: Take 405 South to 5 South, exit Basilone Rd. Follow signs to San Onofre State Beach (not campground) Opens @ 6:30am. There is very good signage.

Bring your own food & drinks, this is a remote beach, no services or snack bar available.

Bring surfboards, umbrellas (shade is scarce and a sunny day can get hot), beach chairs, volleyball, sunscreen and be ready for fun!

Starijuana

Surfing | 1 Comment

[stair-uh-wah-nuh] –verb (used without object)
starijuana.jpg 1. to gaze fixedly and intently at the surf early in the morning, esp. with eyes half open, with the assumption that the longer you look at the surf the better it will get.
2. to be boldly or obtrusively conspicuous while gazing at the surf: The early morning surfer is caught in starijuana out at the waves in an otherwise sleepy morning

Have you ever caught yourself in early morning starijuana seemingly not making a decision to either go out in the water or just leave and go back to sleep. Once again I found myself not ready to make the leap into the cold water since it just looked big and dumpy and cold.(Santa Monica Surf Report)
